Watson and Kirschmann excel at Region 4 wrestling duals

The Upson-Lee Knights wrestling team finished fourth out of 11 schools in the Region 4 Team Duals last week. The Knights are currently 8-8 on the season, as they now prepare themselves for the Region 4 Individual Tournament next month.

The Knights defeated Dutchtown in the Championship Quarter Finals by a team score of 48-31. The Knights then faced off with the No. 6 ranked team in the state, the Locust Grove Wildcats. The Cats defeated the Knights 66-18, and eventually went on to win the Region 4 Team Duals.

Upson-Lee then faced the Dutchtown Bulldogs in the Consolation Semifinals, and defeated the Dawgs 54-21, before falling to Woodland in the Consolation Finals by a team score of 54-27. Upson-Lee’s Dillon Watson and C. J. Kirschmann led the way for the Knights with records of 4-0 and 3-1 respectively. Watson won all four of his matches by pin, and Kirschmann is now 19-2 overall this season.

Jeff Bloodworth (220 lbs), Deven Green (132 lbs) and C. J. Kirschmann (195 lbs) each won two matches by pins in the tournament. Jake Weatherford (182 lbs), Michael Kirschmann (138 lbs), Kolby Shcadenberg (113 lbs), and Devontae Daniel (145 lbs) each earned one pin in the tournament. Jake Weatherford also won a match by points.

The following wrestlers won matches by forfeit: Kolby Schadenber, C. J. Kirschmann, Jeff Bloodworth, Jacob Daniel, Jacob Jackson (two matches by forfeit), Jake Haley, Matthew Delli-Gatti, and Jake Weatherford. Devontae Daniel also won a match by disqualification.

Before the Christmas break, the Knights faced off with Lamar County, dominating the Trojans by a team score of 54-15.

Erik Foster (126 lbs), Anthony Delli-Gatti (132 lbs), Jake Haley (152 lbs), Jacob Jackson (285 lbs), C. J. Kirschmann (195 lbs), Jake Weatherford (182 lbs), and Tyrese Davis (170) each won their matches by pin. Michale Kirschmann (138 lbs) won his match on points, while Dillon Watson (160 lbs) won his match by forfeit.

The Knights defeated Spalding County in a sub-region battle on Wednesday night but the finals statistics were not available by press time. Look in Tuesday’s edition of The Times for a recap of the action.
