Every year for a short window of time between the Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations, we are reminded to be thankful; to take the time to appreciate all the blessings we have received over the last year. When you think about it, it is a pretty simple thing to do, and once you get started you may find that your list is much longer than you originally thought it would be. Even though I think giving thanks for the blessings in your life should be a year-round deal, the holiday season serves as a nice reminder in case we forget.

In my opinion, it is easy to be thankful for the good things in your life. Things like loved ones who are always by your side, having a job in this tough economy, excited kisses from your dog after a long day and a roof over your head. It is however, a little more difficult for the not-so-great things. I am not meaning anything too terrible, even though I believe that something good can come from every situation, but rather the little annoyances that can rob you of a great day.

I have decided this year that my list of what I am thankful for would not be my traditional one. I am still extremely thankful for my family, friends and my dog, but this year in an effort to improve my way of thinking and focus on becoming more positive, I am also thankful for the things that often irritate me. I believe there is a silver lining for everything, sometimes you just have to look harder to be able to see it. So here goes, in 2012 I am thankful for: · The laundry that piles up because it means I have clothes to wear. · My jeans fitting a little snug because it means I have enough to eat. · The taxes that are taken out of my check every two weeks because it means that I am employed. · Grass that needs to be mowed, vacuuming that needs to be done and a shower that needs to be scrubbed because it means that I have a home. · Finding a spot at the far end of the parking lot at Wal-Mart because it means I am able to walk. · All of the complaining I hear about the government because it means we have freedom of speech. · The difficult people in my life because they have made me stronger and shown me exactly who I do not want to be. · My ever increasing gas bill because it means my house is warm on cold nights. · The lady who sings off key each Sunday in church because it means I can hear. · Most importantly, the alarm clock that wakes me up all too early in the morning because it means God has chosen to let me live another day.

I hope you were able to take the time yesterday to realize just how much there is to be thankful for in your life. However, if the stress of cooking for the holiday or crazy family members robbed you of those thoughts, look for the silver lining: you made it through the day and in my book that is definitely something to be thankful for above everything else.
