WOODBURY- It was a bittersweet end for the Flint River seniors last Friday as they fell 44-21 to the Memorial Day Blue Thunder. Despite the loss, the 2012 FRA Wildcats orchestrated an amazing turnaround after an abysmal 2-8 record last season.

Memorial Day scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first half, and led 22-0 at halftime. The Wildcats got on the board in the third quarter with a 31-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Seth Short. Memorial Day responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass, but FRA answered right back with tailback Will Couch going 67 yards for a touchdown. This made the score 30-15. Later in the third, Short found senior receiver Russell Durand for a 37-yard touchdown to make it 30-21. Unfortunately for the Cats, Memorial Day eventually pulled away in the fourth, winning the game 44-21. Despite the final result, Will Couch had an incredible day on the ground. He had 156 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Russell Durand led the Cats in receiving with 84 yards on just 4 catches and a TD.

The Wildcats finished the season 8-4 (including playoffs). They also had an impressive 6-game win streak during the regular season after starting 1-2.

Wildcat head coach Jason Carrera said after the game, “It was a tough loss, and our guys played a lot better than the final score represented. We had a great drive to start the second half, but just couldn’t get off the field on defense. This has been a great group of guys and a great season. These seniors have left a winning legacy that can be carried on into next year.”

FRA finished as the Region 4AA runner-up in 2012, and they will look to build off of this season’s success in 2013.
