Ninth-grade boys sign a graduation gown and receive a booklet and blue graduation ring during the Freshstart ceremony held Sept. 18 at Upson-Lee High School. Boys signed one gown and girls signed another. To the right in the photo is a time capsule they will fill this week and will be opened during their senior year in 2016. The Freshstart ceremony was sponsored by Balfour and the Thomaston-Upson School System and is used to get ninth-grade students to commit to staying in school and graduating in four years. During the presentation, the freshmen watched a video and heard from three upper classmen about the need to study hard and keep up with their classes. The gowns will be placed in the school to remind the students of their commitment to graduate in May 2016. This week, the students will fill out forms with their goals and dreams for 2016. The forms will be sealed and placed in the time capsule. Four years from now, the capsule will be opened and the forms given back to the students so they can see how well they have done.
