After a miraculous comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning against Albany to reach the state tournament, the Dixie Boys All-Stars traveled south to Winder, Ga. to take on Troup County in the state Continental Tournament on July 5.
The first game of this double elimination tournament saw the All-Stars from Thomaston square off against the All-Stars from Troup Co. Ultimately, the first inning was the demise for the Thomaston All-Stars as they allowed 8 runs to cross the plate.
“We came out flat and made some mental mistakes in that first inning”, said Head Coach David Weatherford.
Despite the slow start, the boys from T-Town played the Troup All-Stars to a 4-2 score the rest of the game, eventually failing 12-2. After at tough, disappointing loss in their first game, the Thomaston All-Stars had to come back the next day and try to rebound against Collins Hill.
Again, a slow start hampered the Thomaston Boys in the first inning as they quickly were in a hole. Going into the fifth inning the Thomaston All-Stars were looking at an 11-1 deficit ,and staring at being run ruled, but with two outs, the hard nosed kids from Upson County didn’t know the meaning of the word quit. They battled back to score enough runs to keep the game alive.
“In the second game, our kids battled back and showed their true colors. We played hard and showed we had enough heart to climb back and make a game of this thing,” stated Weatherford..
Though the boys from Thomaston fought back towards the end of the game, the early runs surrendered proved to be too much, as Collins Hill prevailed 15-9.
“These thirteen kids really bonded over this weekend and it was a learning experience for all of them”, said Weatherspoon, who was helped by his assistant coaches John Ellerbee and Tim Bosworth.
When asked about the overall experience of this year’s All-Stars season, Coach Weatherford stated, “John, Tim, and I are so proud of the kids for their accomplishments, they have shown us and everyone who has seen them play.
“Baseball is not dead in Upson County.”
