The Diamond Knights of Upson-Lee Middle School, under the new direction of Head Coach Michael Kirby, have got off to a 1-2 start this season.

The team opened the year with an 11-1 loss at Henderson Middle School in Griffin. The only hit of the game for the Knights came from Tyler Royal in the third inning after Storm Roland walked to lead off the inning and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Conner. Roland scored on the Royal hit, but Henderson already had a lead that they would not relinquish.

Dylan Nelson gave up seven earned runs on four hits and four walks in the first two innings on the mound. Dominic Mathis followed with two innings of work, giving up two earned runs on one hit and three walks.

UL responded with a 2-1 win at home against Lamar County, scoring both of their runs in the third inning during a span in which Lamar committed three errors.

Tyler Royal had a fantastic day on the mound. He went the entire game and gave up the one run on four walks and an error while giving up no hits and striking out 10 batters.

Crawford County returned the favor last Friday when they no-hit the Knights in a 10-0 win. Upson-Lee struck out 11 times in the five-inning loss.

The Middle School Diamond Knights will host Byron tomorrow at the Municipal Field at 4:30, and begin a three-game road trip on Friday with a game at Clifton Ridge.
