Thomaston's 10 & Under All-Stars won the 4th District G.R.P.A. Mite Live Fastpitch Tournament, held at the Upson-Lee Softball Complex this past Friday and Saturday.
Friday night the girls dominated Lamar County in the first round, winning 17-1.
Kama Weatherford led off the game for Thomaston with a single. She would later score, along with two other runners, to give Thomaston the early 3-0 lead.
Lamar County's one run came in the bottom of the first.
Thomaston added five in the second and nine in the third to push the lead to 17-1 and the mercy rule was put into play.
Weatherford, Jessica Owenby and Alexis Swafford each had a hit and scored three runs in the game.
Thomaston then played Carroll County later the same night, winning 11-10.
Carroll County controlled the game early, scoring one in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth, leading 9-0 after five and a half innings.
Rachelle Richmond and Chelle Riddle led of the bottom of the inning with walks and they were followed by hits from Kama Weatherford, Jessica Owenby and Alexis Swafford. Thomaston nearly batted around twice in the inning, scoring nine runs to stun Carroll County and tie the game.
Carroll's leadoff was walked to start the sixth and later scored to push the lead to 10-9.
Alexis Swafford singled to start the bottom of the sixth. Then three straight Thomaston batters were walked.
Two runs scored in the inning to complete the comeback and win the game for Thomaston, 11-10.
On Saturday Carroll County was back, and facing elimination they put up a good fight, and Thomaston found themselves playing catch-up again.
Carroll County scored two runs in the second to get up 2-0.
Keyanna Holley walked to start the third and later scored to cut the lead to 2-1, but Carroll got the run back in the bottom of the inning, and the lead stood at 3-1.
In the top of the fourth Oprah Winfrey's single batted in one run, and Winfrey later scored to tie the game at three.
Hits from Kama Weatherford and Candice Patterson in the fifth scored three more runs for Thomaston and gave them the lead at 6-3.
Carroll County caught fire in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs off of two hits and regaining the lead at 7-6.
Thomaston fought back to tie the game in the sixth and take the lead early in the seventh, but two runs late in the game for Carroll County gave them the win, and another game was to be played.
Thomaston completely dominated the final game, winning 16-3. The game was called after three innings.
Leaders in the game for Thomaston were Oprah Winfrey with two hits and Alexis Swafford with two runs batted in.
The win gave Thomaston the 2005 4th District G.R.P.A. Mite Live Fastpitch Tournament Championship.
The girls will now host the State Class B tournament, which will be held at the Upson-Lee Softball Complex Thursday, July 21st - Saturday, July 23rd.
Admission to the event will be $2 for children ages 6-16 and $3 for adults.
Thomaston's first game will be tomorrow evening at 4:00 against District Six Champion Walton County.
The winner of the game will play District Five Champion Murray County tomorrow night at 8:00. The loser will play Friday at noon.
