GRIFFIN – The Upson Lee Knights high school football team still has another week before they hit the field for their 2015 season, but the Upson Lee Middle School Knights got a taste of their first action of the year on Wednesday.

The ULMS Knights traveled to Griffin to face the Kennedy Middle School Cougars, and after a long and hard fought game, the Knights came away with a 20-14 victory.

“I thought we did a really good job of competing today,” said ULMS Head Coach Tom Cook. “We had some guys that did not dress today, so we had guys playing on both sides of the ball, and I thought they really battled out there. We still have a long way to go, but our mistakes are correctable.”

After the opening kickoff, the Knights forced the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs, and took over on offense, scoring on their first drive of the game. Upson Lee’s Keon Colbert scored on a one yard run, giving the Knights a 6-0 lead, and then ran in the two point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Kennedy tied the game up with just 7.5 seconds left in the first half of the game. A Cougar receiver got behind the Knights secondary for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Kennedy then also scored on a two point conversion attempt, and the two teams finished the first half of the game in an 8-8 tie.

Upson Lee received the ball to start the second half. With 6:40 left in the third quarter, Xzavious Mathis scored on a 35- yard touchdown run. The Knights two point conversion failed, but Upson Lee led by a 14-8 score.

The Knights took the 14-8 lead into the fourth quarter, and added to their lead then Kesean Carter scampered into the end zone on a 38-yard touchdown run. However, once again the Knights failed to convert the two-point conversion, but led by a 20-8 score.

With 2:21 left in the game, Kennedy would add another score on a 13-yard touchdown run, to cut the Knights lead to 20-14. Kennedy also failed on its two point conversion, and Upson Lee would make a couple of first downs to run out the clock and seal the 20-14 victory.

Upson Lee will host Carver Road Middle School in their home opener at Matthews Field next Wednesday, and according to Cook, the Knights may have their hands full.

“I know Carver is going to be one of the better teams we see this season,” said Cook. “They have some really big athletic players, but we’re just gonna take it one game at a time.”

Upson Lee and Carver will kick off next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
