I hope everyone had a good summer. Your Knights are back in action, and we are looking forward to a fantastic year. Last year was one of the best athletic years in our school’s history. I contribute our success as a school to the hard working coaches and athletes at Upson-Lee High School. These young women and men rose to the challenge and Upson-Lee is back on the map with athletics. Thank you for supporting us and being good Knights’ fans. As a school, we feel it is extremely important that we have the support of the community, and last year we saw some of the largest crowds at games in recent years.
I would also like to thank the Upson-Lee Booster and Touchdown Clubs. Without their hard work and contributions, our staff and student athletes would not have had the resources they need and desire. Here are some items that both these groups helped fund for the athletic department: Football: Practice Jerseys, Away Varsity Jerseys, Banquet and Awards; Volleyball: Judge’s Stand; XC: Team Tent; Softball: Windscreen for Dugout, Helmets and Practice Balls; Basketball: Warm-Ups, Ball Cart; Wrestling: Headgear; Track: Replaced Hurdles; Tennis: Ball Machine; Golf: Hotel Fee for State Championship; Baseball: Bubba Batting Cage
Last year was a fabulous year for us as an athletic community but, we are just getting started. Our athletic department worked all summer getting ready for this year, and there is a new excitement at Upson-Lee. Our coaching staff is working hard every day to ensure our athletes are prepared for the challenges they will face on and off the field this year. Academics are extremely important to us, and our coaches are instituting study hall and Power School checks every week. We have introduced a new program called the 75 Club. When an athlete falls below a 75 in any class, the coach is to counsel that athlete and to use whatever tools necessary to influence the student athlete to get his or her grade back up to a 75 or higher. I would also like to encourage you to have your child sign up to take the ACT or SAT if your child has aspirations of playing college sports. Schools in which your child is interested will tell you exactly what scores are required in order to gain entry to that school’s athletic program. We have an SAT Prep class at Upson-Lee High School to help our students get ready for these exams.
As a department, we are very excited about this year. Our motto is “iron sharpens iron” and we have a “family” concept of being one coaching staff. I ask you, as parents, to trust our coaches with your son or daughter in the classroom and at the ball field. These coaches work hard every day in the classroom and on the athletic fields. We take pride in what we do at Upson-Lee, and I promise you that our coaches will give a 100% commitment to their team. Please encourage your child to give 100% effort at practice, games, and, of course, in the classroom. We encourage our student athletes not to quit – finish what you start, no matter the circumstances. Sports and academics are tough, and our student athletes need to realize they cannot quit just because things get tough. Practices are designed to be tough and demanding, and we want athletes who will stand their ground when things get tough. The UL way is that we step up in the face of pressure; we do not back down.
This is our time to show our community and our state that Upson-Lee is here to play and will compete at the highest level. Our kids should play every match or game like it is the state championship, and we want our opponents to wish they did not have to face us ever again. No matter the challenge or the opponent, Upson-Lee is ready to compete. Last year was a fantastic year for us, and we are just getting started. Remember, it is all about the UL!
