After a season opening 6-4 victory in Griffin against the Lady Jags from Spalding High School last Tuesday, the Lady Knights hit the road once again on Thursday to face Brookstone. The private school from Columbus handed the Lady Knights their first loss of the season, defeating Upson Lee by a 7-2 score.
However, on Friday Upson Lee had a chance at redemption, but once again they would have to hit the road to do so. The Lady Knights traveled up Highway 36 to face the Lady Trojans from Lamar County High School in a double header.
In the first game of the twin bill, UL gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After back to back singles, Lamar County scored two runs on a third single with two outs, leading UL by a 2-0 score after one inning of play.
In the second inning Montana Schug led off with a single for the Lady Knights, but she was left stranded on the base paths after two strikeouts and a pop up.
UL’s Briana Hendricks toed the rubber for the Lady Knights and sat down Lamar County in order in the bottom of the second inning. It was in the top of the third inning where UL plated a few runs.
Sarah Mast led the inning off with a walk, and then took second base on a wild pitch. Taylor King followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving Mast over to third base. Mary-Masdon McCrary and Briana Hendricks both walked to load the bases, and then Montana Schug singled home two runs scoring Mast and McCrary. However, on an errant throw by the Lady Trojans, Hendricks was also able to score, and UL held a 3-2 lead at the end of the inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Hendricks began to find her rhythm from the circle, sitting down the Lady Trojans in order. In the top of the fourth inning, Upson Lee added to their lead.
Vanessa Harp and Sarah Mast each singled, and Taylor King was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mary-Masdon McCrary then drove home Harp on a fielder’s choice, and Mast then scored on a Lady Trojans fielding error, which came off the bat of Briana Hendricks, giving UL a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hendricks pitched around a single and again got out of the inning without any damage. In the top of the fifth inning the Lady Knights added to more runs to their total.
Freshman Madison Wilder singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Vanessa Harp followed with a walk, and then Sarah Mast laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the bunt, the Lady Trojans threw the ball away, allowing Wilder to score. Upson Lee scored their seventh and final run of the game on a wild pitch, taking a 7-2 lead
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lamar clawed back for one run. After a walk, the Lady Trojans strung together three singles, cutting the Lady Knights lead to 7-3.
After failing to score in the top of the sixth inning, Lamar County gave the Lady Knights a serious scare in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Trojans drew a walk, took advantage of an Upson Lee fielding error, and collected four singles to cut the Lady Knights lead to 7-6.
Leading by one in the bottom of the seventh inning, Briana Hendricks forced three pop ups in a row by Lamar County, giving the Knights the 7-6 victory.
Montana Schug led the Lady Knights with two singles and two RBI. Sarah Mast also singled and scored three runs in the victory. Mary-Masdon McCary, Vanessa Harp, and Madison Wilder all chipped in with hits in the win.
In game two of the day, Upson Lee suffered a 3-1 loss to Lamar County, bringing their record to 2-2 thus far in the 2015 season.
The Lady Knights hosted Mundy’s Mill on Monday in their home opener, but the results of that game were not available by press time. They will also be hosting Howard today in their first region contest of the season.
