The fourth mud boggin’ of the season on June 20 at Thrill Hill shook up the season standings a little bit as points for this race were doubled. When the mud cleared, Garrett Nordan, who has been in 1st place all season, still sat on top, followed by Tommy Matthews in 2nd. But seven of the remaining eight positions in the Top 10 changed hands.
Ashley Williams went from 6th place to 3rd place. Terry Phillips remains in 4th place. Gale Elliott moved up from 7th place to 5th place. Raymond Nordon dropped from being tied for 2nd place down to 6th. Doug Lowery also dropped from 5th to 7th. Ben Carson remains in 8th place, but Terry Elliott dropped out of tie for 8th down to 9th. Mel Miller was in the Top 10 last month, but dropped from 10th to 12th, while Aaron Hammock moved up into 10th place, followed by Colton Brooks in 11th.
At Thrill Hill, each driver gets two passes through the bog. The driver with the two most consistent times wins, regardless if he or she was the fastest through the mud. As he has been most of the season, at the June 20 race Garrett Nordon in Bullseye was the most consistent, with times of 5.726 seconds and 5.862 seconds, a difference of only 0.136. He took 1st Place. Ashley Williams in Lil Man had the fastest time of the day with a time of 4.704 seconds on his first run. His second was 4.850, with a difference of 0.146, good enough for 2nd Place. Gale Elliott in Sum Beach was 3rd, Tommy Matthews in Old School was 4th, and Terry Phillips in Super 10 finished 5th.
Doug Lowery in Stranglehold was 6th, Ben Carson in Slow Poke was 7th, Bobby Elliott in Garrett Boggin was 8th, Aaron Hammock in Shock Wave was 9th, and Raymond Nordon in Slow Poke was 10th.
If you’re wondering why there are two trucks named Slow Poke, there aren’t. Ben Carson is Garrett Nordon’s best friend, and Garrett’s father, Raymond, lets Ben drive his truck, Slow Poke, too. They aren’t the only ones to have two drivers for one truck. Kelly Garrett and Bobby Elliott share Garret Boggin, too.
Rounding out the 16 drivers in June’s boggin were Terry Elliott in Old Red in 11th, Colton Brooks in Pure Hell in 12th, Kelly Garrett in Garrett Boggin in 13th, Jerry Elliott in Shrek in 14th, Ross Rogers in Wasted Money in 15th, and Austin Tweedell in Slow Reaction in 16th.
If you noticed a lot of the racers have the same last names, there are some family connections, too. Terry (Old Red) and Jerry (Shrek) Elliott of Thomaston are twin brothers. Terry’s grandson is Colton (Pure Hell) Brooks, while Jerry’s son, Jay Elliott, sometimes drives his father’s truck, Shrek. Gale (Sum Beach) Elliott from Jackson is no relation to Jerry and Terry, but her brother is Doug (Stranglehold) Lowery from Griffin. Raymond (Slow Poke) Nordon is Garrett (Bullseye) Nordon’s father. They are from Thomaston, too.
Thrill Hill’s next mud boggin’ will be Saturday, July 18. Gates open at noon, with boggin’ starting at 2 p.m. Admission is $10, and children 10 and under are free. Mud boggin’ truck entry fee is $40, with 100 percent payback to drivers.
