Every year the regions in the GHSA honor their players on their teams by selecting an All-Region Team for nearly every sport that is offered at the high school level. Not only do the regions honor the talented high school athletes, but many major publications also pick the cream of the crop. The Macon Telegraph is on of those publications which choose to honor the high school athletes from middle Georgia, creating the All-Middle Georgia Team for nearly every high school sport.
This Spring, the Knights had five athletes named to an All-Middle Georgia Team for their respective sports. Leading the way was Upson Lee senior soccer player Dylan Marshall.
Recently, Marshall was named the Region 2 Co-Offensive player of the year, scoring an amazing 34 goals this season for the Knights, leading all players in scoring in the region. This week, the senior was named First Team All-Middle Georgia by The Macon Telegraph. Last month, Marshall signed to play soccer at Georgia Southwestern. The Hurricanes play in Division II of the NCAA, and they are a member of the PBC (Peach Belt Conference).
Last season the Canes struggled finishing with a 1-7-1 conference record and a 4-11-2 record overall. Other members of the Peach Belt Conference that have a men’s soccer team include the defending champions from Young Harris (Young Harris, Ga.), Francis Marion-University (Florence, S.C.), Clayton State (Morrow, Ga.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.), Flagler College (St. Augustine, Fla.), UNC Pembroke (Pembroke, N.C.), North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.), and Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.).
Marshall was a key component in the ULHS Knights’ 2015 season, a season which saw Upson Lee advance all the way to the Sweet 16, where they lost to Southeast Whitfield. Upson Lee finished with a 14-5 record in 2015.
On the Lady Knights’ side of the action, they saw two members of their team also receive honors from the Telegraph. Alyssa Holmes and McKinley Bradley were each named All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mention.
These two Lady Knights helped lead Upson Lee to another trip to the Sweet 16 in a tough loss to Cartersville. Both players will also be back to play for Coach Jaime Joiner and the Lady Knights in 2016, keeping the future bright for the Lady Knights’ soccer program.
The Upson Lee golf team captured a Region 2 Championship in 2015, and earlier this week had three golfers recognized by the Telegraph. Seniors Justin Gilbert and Zac Hendrix, along with sophomore Wil Hernandez, were each named All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mention. These three Knights led Upson Lee to the State Tournament n 2015, while Gilbert was the low medalist at the Region 2 Golf Tournament with a score of 74.
