HINESVILLE – For just the second time in since 2005, the Upson Lee Knights found themselves in the State Playoffs. Their first round opponent this time just happened to be over 200 miles away, the Liberty County Panthers.
The game Friday night went back and forth with Upson Lee taking a 22-15 lead on a Quay Reviere one yard touchdown run in the third quarter. However Richard Lecounte, the No. 2 rated athlete in the state of Georgia for the class of 2017, single handily put the Panthers on his back, scoring a 58-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and a seven yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, sealing the Knights fate with a 31-22 loss.
The Knights took the ball in on offense to start the game, but were forced to punt after just three plays. The Upson Lee defense returned the favor, forcing Liberty County to punt. However, it would be the Panthers that scored first in the game. With 7:36 left in the first quarter, Lecounte was playing quarterback, and found Eli Polite for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good, and the Panthers led 7-0.
Upson Lee responded late in the first quarter, mounting a long drive down to the Liberty County one yard line. Unfortunately, the hand off between Kalen Puckett and Quay Reviere was bobbled, and Liberty County recovered the fumble. The Knights defense would force Liberty County to punt just three plays later, setting UL up with good field position.
In the second quarter, Upson Lee would tie the game up on a four-yard touchdown run by Quay Reveire, capping off a seven-play, 55-yard drive. The hold or the snap on the PAT was a bad one, so Kalen Puckett decided to take the snap and roll out to his right, where he found Karl Drake all alone in the end zone for the tw- point conversion, giving Upson Lee an 8-7 lead.
The Panthers answered right back, and once again it was Lecounte who put the Panthers back into the lead. Lecounte, who finished with 149 yards rushing and 90 yards passing, accounting for all four touchdowns, scored on a 25-yard scamper up the middle of the Knights defense. The PAT was good, and with 7:30 left in the half, Liberty County led the Knights 15-8.
Upson Lee was able to tie the game up just before halftime. The Knights drove the ball down the field with time running out. With just 11 seconds and a time out left in the bag, Kalen Puckett called his own number on a five yard touchdown run. Rich Stewart added the PAT, and the two teams went into the locker room at the half tied 15-15.
In the third quarter, it looked as if Upson Lee was going to take control of the game. Rich Stewart booted a perfect pooch kick between Liberty County players. Upson Lee’s Zakarriyan Walker recovered the kick, and Upson Lee was in business on the Panther’s 26 yard line.
Seven plays later, Quay Reviere scored his school record 25th touchdown of the season on a two-yard touchdown run. Stewart’s PAT was good, and Upson Lee led 22-15.
From that point on, Upson Lee never scored again. Lecounte would score two more touchdowns, as Liberty County ended the Knights season with a 31-22 loss.
In other Region four games, Mary Persons needed a missed PAT from Wayne County at the end of the game to escape with a 14-13 victory, and they will host Marist next week. West Laurens ran all over Burke County on their way to a 31-14 victory, and they will travel to face St. Pius X next week. Veterans led Thomson 21-20 at halftime, but the Warhawks could not hang on, as Thomson earned a 49-35 victory.
