The Upson Lee Middle School football team finished the season as the No. 3 seed from the Western Division of the CGMSAL (Central Georgia Middle School Athletic League), advancing to the playoffs.
In the first round they traveled to Lamar County October 14 to face the Lamar County Trojans, the No. 2 seed from the Eastern Division. The Knights quickly jumped on top of the Trojans on the opening drive, and never looked back, earning a 20-8 victory.
Thad Webb rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Knights to victory. The Knights’ defense nearly held the Trojans to a shutout, but Lamar County scored its lone touchdown with just over minute remaining in the game.
They got some help from Henderson Middle School out of Jackson. Henderson, the No. 4 seed from the east, knocked off Carver Road, the No. 1 seed from the west by a 6-0 score. That victory means Upson Lee will now host Henderson at Matthews Field in the semifinals, rather than having to travel.
Upson Lee and Henderson will battle for a trip to the CGMSAL Championship Game on Oct. 21. Last season the Knights advanced to the Championship Game, falling to Monroe County. Kickoff for Upson Lee vs Henderson is Oct. 21 at 5 p.m.
