FORSYTH – Friday night was a big night for the Mary Persons Bulldogs and the Upson Lee Knights. Both teams were looking to get closer to clinching a playoff spot, and a victory for either team would all but seal one of the four playoff spots for Region 2.
The Knights seemingly stunned the Bulldogs and a packed Dan Pitts Stadium, jumping on top of Mary Persons 14-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game, looking to avenge last season’s 42-0 loss to the Bulldogs. However, mental mistakes like turnovers and penalties proved to be too much for Upson Lee to overcome, as Mary Persons scored 30 unanswered points to defeat the Knights 30-14.
“There is always going to be something bad that happens in nearly every game,” said UL Coach Tommy Parks. “With that said, it’s how a team responds to bad and tough situations that defines them. We made some mistakes Friday night, and we have to do a better job of overcoming those mistakes. Becoming mentally tough is something that comes over time. We want out kids to play to win, instead of playing not to lose. It’s a mental mindset that you need to have as a team. Programs like Mary Persons have that mindset, that every time they step on the field they believe they will win. We have had several years here of .500 football, and we have to change our mindset if we want to improve on that.”
The Knights looked sharp offensively in the first quarter. Quarterback Kalen Puckett hit Mikey Smith for a 53-yard pass and catch, which set up a 27-yard TD pass to Kendarious Traylor. Rich Stewart booted the PAT, and with 9:19 left in the opening quarter, Upson Lee led 7-0.
In the second quarter, Upson Lee continued to keep Mary Persons in check. Early in the second quarter, Upson Lee senior David Marshall forced a Bulldogs’ fumble, which was recovered by Jayden Barron. The Knights took over on the MP 25 yard line, and five plays later, Quay Reviere punched in the Knights’ second touchdown from one yard out. Stewart added the PAT, and Upson Lee led 14-0.
From that point on, the Knights would not score again. Mary Persons started to find some success on the ground with their running game, but more importantly, when Upson Lee did find a way to stop the Bulldogs and force a punt, the Knights would turn the ball back over to Mary Persons.
Leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Puckett looked to pitch the ball off of the option to Robinson. Unfortunately, Robinson was not there to take the pitch and MP recovered the fumble at the Upson Lee 5-yard line. The Bulldogs scored two plays later, cutting the Knights lead to 14-7.
On the Knights’ next possession, they would find some success with a running game of their own. However, after breaking off a long run near midfield, Robinson fumbled the ball at the UL 44 yard line, and the Bulldogs recovered. This would set up a 32-yard field goal as time expired before halftime, as UL held onto a 14-10 lead.
In the second half of the game Mary Persons would outscore Upson Lee 20-0. On each of the Bulldogs three touchdowns in the second half, they would start their drive in Knights territory. In the game, MP scored on drives of three yards, 29 yards, 49 yards 24 yards, and 21 yards. Upson Lee actually totaled more offensive yards than Mary Persons in the game.
Penalties also hurt Upson Lee, as the Knights tallied 10 penalties for 84 yards in the game.
Upson Lee will now turn their focus on Howard, who is coming off of a bye week. More than likely, the winner of Friday’s game will advance to the playoffs, while the loser will be sitting at home on Nov. 13, the date for the first round of the state playoffs.
