The Upson Lee Knights football team is currently 5-1 so far this season, and have had some impressive victories. The Atlanta Falcons have taken notice, and this week named UL Head Coach Tommy Parks their Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week.
Coach Parks also received the honor in 2013, when he led the Harris County Tigers to a deep playoff run. That year he was also named the Region 1-AAAAA Coach of the Year, and the Columbus Ledger’s Bi-City Coach of the Year.
In his second year at Upson Lee, Coach Parks has started to turn the program around. Under Coach Parks, the Knights are 12-4, and are currently in the midst of the playoff hunt and Region 2 Championship.
Coach Parks also does a lot for the community of Thomaston and Upson County. He and the Knights hold a free football camp every summer, and they also participate in fundraisers for breast cancer and childhood cancer research. Under Coach Parks, the Knights football team has also helped buy gifts for children in foster care during the Christmas season. The varsity players also frequently visit the elementary schools, serving as motivators and mentors to younger students.
“Coach Parks has brought new life to a struggling program. He has strong character and hires other coaches who care about the program as well,” said Upson Lee Athletic Director Stephen Boyd. “He works hand in hand with the faculty for the betterment of our student body ,and he truly deserves this award.”
As Coach of the Week, Coach Parks will receive a $1,000 grant to use towards his football program, a plaque signed by Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn and suite tickets to the Falcons’ home game on December 27.
