Wildfire - An upfront view

The Great Basin is generally very dry in late July and early August. Most thunder showers that come through are fast-moving monsoonal storms and they tend to put out a lot of lightning – but with trace amounts of rainfall. Because of that, the majority of the fires that start here in Northeast Nevada are caused by lightning. The grass and sage is so dry that a single strike can ignite it and the winds generated by the storm – often in excess of 50 miles per hour – spread the...

My first college football game

As the college football season approaches, fans are beginning to get excited about their teams and the possibility of a championship season. Of course these dreams and expectations will fade in most cases as the season progresses. There’s only one champion left standing at the end of the year, although a team can have a great season without winning that National Championship game.As most of you know, I am an Auburn fan who also has a fondness for Georgia Tech. Yeah, I know th...

Business prospects making return trips to county

Summertime has a history of being relatively slow when it comes to economic development, without many prospective companies planning trips to check out communities for their businesses. However, Industrial Development Authority Executive Director Kyle Fletcher was happy to report that had not been the case for Thomaston and Upson County as of late, with the community seeing several prospects make repeat trips to the area.

Relearning good habits

The cold winter, followed by spring monsoons, teamed up to help me form some new habits. Had they been good ones, I would be as happy as a clam in a gin and tonic, but the habits I developed were only suitable for slugs. The habit of walking each morning was the first casualty, but the list is long and slothful. At first, I couldn’t tell a difference in the way I felt, but then I began to realize my energy level was down, and my belt seemed to be shrinking. My guitar...

‘How to Rob the Tooth Fairy’

There is a new author in town and her name is Jada R. Gresham. She has written and published a children’s book entitled “How to Rob the Tooth Fairy,” and as is the case with most writers, she found inspiration for the story from happenings in her own life. However, there is one thing which sets Jada apart from the many other authors of children’s literature; she is only 12-years-old herself.

Do _______ value life less than we do?

During the Vietnam War, my mother, an otherwise sweet and compassionate person, said “they” (Vietnamese) don’t value human life like we do, suggesting that I be more comfortable killing them. I never was comfortable with the idea of killing them, and so I didn’t.However, I still hear some people say that an “enemy” doesn’t value human life like we do. Over the years, the enemy changes, but the refrain is the same: some people on “our&...

And a little child shall lead them

I have said many times before, my favorite part of this job is getting to meet interesting people and share their stories with our readers and that is a fact that remains true to this day. In the past five years, I have had the pleasure of interviewing many wonderful members of this community, who through events in their lives have sometimes made me laugh, sometimes made me cry and often restored my faith in humanity. Even once the interviews are over and the articles are written, I am able t...

Upson-Lee and Troup County scrimmage tonight

November 8 of last year was the last time the Upson-Lee Knights competed against another team on the football field. On that night, they suffered a 31-7 loss to the Stockbridge Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Tonight, Upson-Lee will get their first chance of 2014 to compete against another team. This game will not mean nearly as much as the Stockbridge game last season, but to some degree it may forecast a little of what fans can expect from the Knights in 2014.

What Ray Rice teaches us about civilization

The public outcry over Roger Goodell’s failure to adequately punish NFL running back Ray Rice for knocking out his girlfriend in an Atlantic City hotel elevator is an encouraging sign that some vestige of civilization remains. It has been heartening to hear from talking heads that even in 2014 some things are still not tolerable. And, that one of those intolerable things is a man hitting a woman.

A new look, a new approach, a new year

I am Coach Stephen Boyd, the Athletic Director at Upson-Lee, and I wanted to let you know about some exciting things we have going on this year at UL. Our goal this year, besides winning ball games, is to unite our community with the slogan, “It’s all about the UL.” It’s time for us to uplift our programs with coaching up our kids in the classroom, at practice, on the playing field, and at home. This is one of the best coaching staffs in the state, and I promise they w...
