The Thomaston Sertoma Club continues to provide support to the Speech and Language Department of the Thomaston-Upson School System. At the club’s meeting on Sept. 13, President Timmy Daniel presented the Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) of the system with a check for $4,600. The funds will be used to purchases applications for usage on the SLP’s iPads that were purchases last year with the donation from Sertoma. All 240 speech and language students in the system work on individualized education programs and the iPads are invaluable because there are applications available that can be changed to fit the students’ needs, the iPads can be used to record the students’ voices and let them listen to themselves - some are hearing themselves recorded for the first time, parents who have iPads or computers at home can help the students with their work, the students can interact with their peers better, and there are applications that make great tools for assessment and data tracking. Department Director Jana Marks said that this year, especially with all the state and federal cuts in education, being able to afford the iPads and the apps with the funds from Sertoma make it one less thing for them to worry about.
