A Meansville man is facing numerous drug and traffic charges in Thomaston, plus a felony theft by taking charge in Upson County, following a wild night on Sept. 27 when he took a car without permission, then proceeded to lead Thomaston Police on a high speed chase through a neighborhood.
Thomaston Police Officer Bruce Gilbert was on patrol on North Church Street at Deluxe Circle about 11:52 p.m. last Thursday night when he spotted a green 1999 Volkswagen Jetta with a taillight out. He turned on his blue lights and attempted to stop the vehicle. According to his report, it turned onto 12th Avenue toward G Street, traveling at a slow rate of speed. The Jetta then turned onto G Street and increased its speed. Failing to stop at the stop sign at G Street and Deluxe Circle, the car turned east onto Deluxe Circle at a high rate of speed. Braking hard at the corners, the Jetta turn back onto 12th Avenue, then B Street, 11th Avenue, and F Street. The driver had trouble with a sharp curve on F Street and the car went into the opposite lane and hit the curb. It then turned on E Street, 11th Avenue, F Street, 10th Avenue, and B Street, then into a back alley along B Street. The Jetta then turned into a wooded area in the vicinity of E and F Streets, circling the wood line before turning and wrecking in a ravine.
The driver exited the vehicle and appeared to flee. Officers Johnny Middlebrooks and Michael Sanders had joined the chase by this time, and all three officers gave chase on foot. Officer Sanders found the suspect, identified as William Aaron Hubbard, 39, hiding near the vehicle, and captured him. Hubbard allegedly told the officers he had a suspended license and that there was methamphetamine (meth) and marijuana in the center console of the vehicle. He allegedly added that he had just smoked meth. A search of the area around the car found a clear glass pipe and a green leafy substance. A search of the car found a clear plastic baggie with a crystallized substance inside, and a purple bag containing scales, a watch, and a stick pipe.
Hubbard was taken to Upson Regional Medical Center, where he submitted to a blood test, then he was transported to the Upson County Jail. A check with the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) found that he was wanted in Pike County.
Hubbard was charged by Thomaston Police with driving under the influence of drugs, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act , possession of methamphetamine, possession and use of drug related objects, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, failure to obey a stop sign, driving with a suspended license, taillight lense required, and criminal trespass.
About the same time the chase was going on, Upson County Sheriff’s Deputy Clayton Jones responded to a stolen vehicle call at 111 F Street. Kenny Shaheen told Jones he had allowed Tiffany Wilkes to test drive his 1999 green Volkswagen Jetta for four days before deciding if she was going to buy it. Wilkes told Jones that she and her boyfriend, William Aaron Hubbard, were at her residence on Rual Maine Road that night when Hubbard left and took the car without her permission. Shaheen and Wilkes were advised of the chase and transported to the wreck scene, where Shaheen positively identified his car. Hubbard has been charged with felony Theft by Taking by the Upson County Sheriff’s Office.
