Coy Bowles receives 2012 Children’s Impact Award

ATLANTA — Guitarist, arranger and keyboard artist Coy Bowles of Thomaston, a member of two-time GRAMMY Award-winning Zac Brown Band, and the leader of Atlanta band Coy Bowles and The Fellowship, has received the 2012 Children’s Impact Award from the Georgia Charter Schools Association (GCSA). Bowles was honored for his book, “Amy Giggles,” which deals with bullying.

Bowles is known not only for his musicianship, but for his interest in children and education. His charitable foundation, Coy Cares, was founded with the help of two of Coy’s former teachers, Patsy Dean and Tom Sullivan. The foundation’s goal is to strengthen the belief that with hard work dreams are possible; and to nurture talented youth and give them opportunities to develop their talent.

Tony Roberts, CEO of the Georgia Charter Schools Association, praised Bowles as he presented the award. “I met Coy Bowles in the green room of a local TV station where we were both being interviewed. Coy Bowles expressed interest in public charter schools that morning and a friendship began. I was pleased to get to know this proud Georgia boy from Thomaston who has a real commitment to giving back. His book, “Amy Giggles,” about a girl who is bullied for her very loud laugh, has a wonderful message for school age children. It’s a story of self-confidence and reassurance, accepting of who you are, and realizing that our differences make us beautiful and unique. I look forward to reading it to my grandson when he’s old enough,” Roberts said.
