Shots fired at business, residence

The Upson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating shots being fired at a local business and at a residence. On Oct. 13, Sgt. Rodney Ozley responded to a criminal damage call at Patriot Motors on Highway 19 North. When he arrived, the owner stated he had noticed a dent in an inside door and said it looked like a bullet had struck it. Checking the front door, a bullet hole was found in the bottom of the door. A search inside recovered a shell casing, possibly from a .22 or .25 caliber rifle.

Two days later, on Oct. 15, Deputy Bob Blankenship responded to a damage call at a residence on Barnesville Highway. The owner stated he found a bullet hole in the front door of his 6 x 6 steel well house building. A check inside showed the bullet went through the door and hit the back wall of the building. No shell casing was found.

Sheriff’s officers are investigating a series of burglaries and thefts that have occurred during the last few weeks. On Oct. 12, Dep. Allen Ragsdale responded to a residence on Atwater Road, where the owner said a door from the garage had been kicked in and a jewelry box containing numerous earrings, necklances, and rings was taken. Also on Oct. 12, Dep. Ragsdale answered a call at a home on Waymansville Road. A pressure washer, gas leaf blower, weed eater and hedge trimmer were all taken from a pole barn on the property.

A day later, on Oct. 13, Dep. James Roscoe responded to a vacant mobile home on Hannah’s Mill Road. The owner said the door and windows had been screwed shut and that someone had removed the screws from the door and entered the trailer and tried to steal a ceiling fan. The fan was still in the trailer, but was dangling down from the ceiling. Also on Oct. 13, Sgt. Robert Barfield answered a call at a house on Willingham Springs Road, where a Glock 17 9mm pistol was missing.

On Oct. 14, Dep. Ragsdale took a call at a vacant house on Yatesville-Barnesville Road. The owner said her son had been living there until last month and when they went back to retrieve some of his belongings, a Marlin .22 rifle with a scope was missing. A day later on Oct. 15, Dep. Blankenship responded to a vacant house on Willis Road. A real estate agent and prospective client met him there. The agent said someone had removed copper wiring from the walls all throughout the house, causing major damage to the walls. Finally, a day later on Oct. 16, Dep. Blankenship answered another call to the house on Yatesville-Barnesville Road where a rifle had been reported stolen two days earlier. The owner said sometime between June 1 and Oct. 15, someone had taken three revolvers, a rifle, clothing, cameras and jewelry, a total value of $3,500.
