Two members of the senior class at Upson-Lee High School approached the Board of Education last week about the possibility of naming the new Thomaston-Upson Performing Arts Center after Mr. James R. Argroves, a beloved teacher and mentor who passed away suddenly in March.

Senior Class President Kendra Richardson and Student Council President Lauren Harrell presented the board with the following request.

“On behalf of Upson-Lee High School, we would like to present the idea of naming the new fine arts center in honor of Mr. James R. Argroves. We feel that Mr. Argroves has earned this honor because he was the face of Upson-Lee High School and the Upson County community. He has taught our generation and numerous generations before us as well. Mr. Argroves was a loving man who put a smile on every person’s face he encountered. He was not only a phenomenal teacher and person who is honored by all, but he also appreciated the arts and made it a priority to instill this same appreciation in his students. By naming the fine arts center after Mr. James R. Argroves, his name and legacy will live on forever.”

Board of Education Chairman Keith Rohling thanked the ladies and noted that the board would take the request under advisement. The performing arts center, which has been constructed with funding from the ESPLOST, is slated to open this May.
