Sheriff’s Office purchases four new cars

The Upson County Sheriff’s Office now has four new Dodge Chargers in service. The 2012 Chargers were purchased through the State of Georgia state vehicle contract and paid for with SPLOST funds. These cars feature a new graphic design and should make deputies more visible while on patrol.

The vehicles cost $23,488.81 each and are fully equipped with law enforcement equipment, including computers that allow the deputies to complete reports, check tag and driver’s license information, and make inquiries for wanted persons and stolen items directly from their cars. The computers are paid for through a grant from the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.

These are the first new vehicles purchased by the Sheriff’s Office since 2010 and they will be assigned to the uniformed patrol division. These vehicles will replace four aging and higher mileage vehicles in the fleet. These are the first Chargers placed in use by the Upson County Sheriff’s Office, which has historically operated the Ford Crown Victoria until Ford stopped producing it in 2011.

The local SPLOST provides for funding for four new Sheriff’s vehicles per year for five years. This method of funding pays for vehicles using one percent special purpose local option sales tax, rather than property tax dollars. The Sheriff’s Office is thankful for this funding as it helps keep deputies in newer and safer vehicles and reduces the tax burden on local property owners. The Upson County Sheriff’s Office is very excited about these vehicles and the new design and thanks Upson’s citizens for supporting them through SPLOST.
