Out of the 95 electric service providers in the State of Georgia, including 42 EMC’s, 52 municipal electric systems like the City of Thomaston, and Georgia Power, in the summer of 2012, Thomaston is ranked in the bottom 25 electric rates in three out of four categories. Thomaston is ranked No. 3 in 500 Kilowatt Hours (KWH), No. 13 in 1000 KWH, No. 23 in 1500 KWH, and No. 40 in 2000 KWH.

The survey is done twice a year by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to show how much electricity costs around the state.

At a called Thomaston City Council meeting on July 24, Council member Jim Phillips noted that these figures will reassure residents that the city is working to keep costs low.

“Citizens who don’t have any information about this, once they see these figures, will know that we are really running a very efficient operation here, electricity wise,” said Phillips.

At 500 KWH, Thomaston is the 3rd lowest with a rate of $48.03, which translates to 9.606 cents per kilowatt hour. At 1000 KWH, Thomaston is 13th lowest with a rate of $102.94, or 10.2940 cents per hour. At 1500 KWH, Thomaston is ranked 23rd lowest with $161.25 or 10.75 cents per hour, and at 2000 KWH, Thomaston is 40th with $215.25 or 10.7625 cents per hour.

By comparison, Upson EMC is ranked 46th lowest at 500 KWH, 42nd at 1000 KWH, and 43rd at both 1500 and 2000 KWH. Georgia Power is ranked 54th at 500 KWH, 89th at 1000 KWH, and 94th out of 95 providers at both 1500 and 2000 KWH.
