The Upson-Lee Knights football season ended with a 23-11 victory over Woodland nearly two weeks ago, but for three standout players on the Knights squad, they will have yet another chance to strap on the helmet in 2012.
Seniors Ben Barber, Corey Moss, and Cornell Harris III, have been chosen to play in the Middle Georgia All-Star Game on Dec. 22 in Macon. The game will take place at the Ed DeFore Sports Complex, located just off the campus of Westside-Macon High School. The game is designed to give college recruits a chance to evaluate some of the best senior football players the area has to offer.
“These three young men are what Upson-Lee football is all about,” said head coach Tommy Watson. “They are outstanding young men on the field and off. They have worked hard in practices and in games throughout their career, and I’m so happy for them to be playing in the game. It’s an honor to them, and having three players on our team chosen to play speaks volumes about the direction of our football program. They will represent Upson-Lee very in the game and later in life.”
Ben Barber
Ben Barber rarely came off the field in the 2012 season, playing on offense, defense, and special teams. Ben was a staple on the Knights defensive line in 2012, giving the Knights a formidable pass rusher and a presence in stopping the run. Offensively Barber played tight end, catching eight passes for 107 yards and a TD. The 6’5, 220 pound senior is being courted at the collegiate level by schools such as Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Troy State, and Charleston Southern.
Corey Moss
Breaking more school records than one can begin to count, Corey Moss led the Knights offensive attack in 2012, which averaged over 25 points per game. Moss also played stellar defense from his cornerback position. The 6’1, 170 pound athlete is being recruited by several schools at WR and one school in particular as a QB. Schools such as Louisville, Kentucky, Troy State, Middle Tennessee, and South Florida just to name a few, are recruiting Moss as a WR, with Georgia Tech showing interest in Moss as a QB. Moss finished his career (starting 2 years) with 30 rushing touchdowns, 2,697 yards rushing, and 1,136 yards passing with 10 passing touchdowns.
Cornell Harris III
Cornell Harris has done it all for the Knights defense in his three years as a starter. Harris has played defensive line, inside linebacker, and outside linebacker. The 6’, 205 pound senior was named second team All-Region in his junior season, and was a team leader in tackles and sacks in 2012. Harris is the first ever linebacker from Upson-Lee to play in the Middle Georgia All-Star Game.
The game will be played between the East All-Stars and the West All-Stars, with the Knights players participating on the West All-Stars team. Last season, the east defeated the West with a Hail Mary pass as time expired. Previous Upson-Lee players who have played in the All-Star Game include Jacarus Carthon, Keaton Tomlin, and Dontavious Tucker. Last season Tucker’s outstanding play in last year’s game helped him earn a football scholarship to Charleston Southern University, where he now plays as a safety for the Buccaneers.
