Thomaston’s Cam Short became only the seventh person from Thomaston to ever be a part of a National Championship football team after Valdosta State defeated Winston-Salem State by a 35-7 score in the NCAA Div. II National Championship Game on Saturday. Short joins Ronnie Lowe (N.E. Oklahoma State in 1967), Joe Jones (Alabama 1978 & ‘79), Hugh Nall (Georgia 1980), Tony Berryhill (Clemson 1981) James Carter (Ga. Southern 1985 & ‘86), and Tunde Fariyike (Auburn 2010). As a Team Captain for the past two season, Cam was named First Team All-Conference in the Gulf South Conference and was also named Valdosta State Male Athlete of the Year last spring.
