Dr. Eugene Walker is all smiles as he holds up a framed poster promoting the Upson County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s (SCLC) annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Banquet, held Saturday night with Dr. Walker as the keynote speaker. It was appropriate that he is standing in front of a basketball goal in the Drake-Worthy Gym, as Dr. Walker coached the Drake High School boys basketball team to two state championships in 1962 and 1963. Dr. Walker also taught at Clark College, was the State Senator for the 43rd District, was Commissioner of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and was a member of State Board of Pardons and Paroles until his retirement in 2006. Dr. Walker is a native of Thomaston, and now resides with his wife, Patricia, in DeKalb County.
