The Upson-Lee Lady Knights softball team improved their record to 3-2 with a 12-0 blow out victory over Mundy’s Mill on Tuesday. Upson-Lee belted 11 hits on their way to the four-inning victory, while pitchers Brianna Hendricks and Kaylee Ellington combined to give up just two hits, striking out six batters, and allowing zero walks.


Things seemed bleak for the Lady Knights as they went down in the top of the first with three strikeouts. However, in the top of the second inning, Upson-Lee took a 1-0 lead after Hannah Watson scored the first run of the game. Watson led off the inning with by reaching on an error, followed by a stolen base from the senior first baseman. Shemmie Traylor then sacrificed Watson over to third base, and Watson came home to score a wild pitch.


Freshman Brianna Hendricks allowed one runner to reach base due to a fielding error in the bottom of the second inning, but retired the next three batters in order, as the Lady Knights headed to the top of the third inning with a 1-0 lead.


In the top of the third inning, Upson-Lee opened the flood gates. The Lady Knights batted around, while recording seven hits in the inning, including a two-run double from senior Bethany Smith. Upson-Lee scored nine runs in the inning, with singles coming from Mary-Masdon McCrary, Olivia Lindsey, Hannah Watson, and Shemmie Traylor. Bethany Smith and Brianna Hendricks each doubled in the inning, while Sarah Mast added a two-run triple.


After the big top of the third inning, the Lady Knights led by a 10-0 score. Hendricks pitched another perfect inning, and the Lady Knights tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bethany Smith tripled to lead off the inning, and later came home to score on a fielder’s choice by Traylor. After a couple of stolen bases by Traylor, she came home to score on a Sarah Mast base hit, sealing the Lady Knights 12-0 victory.


Bethany Smith and Sarah Mast led the Lady Knights with two hits and two runs scored. Smith and Mast both hit triples, while Smith also added a double. Mary-Masdon McCrary added two singles and a run scored, while Shemmie Traylor, Brianna Hendricks, Hannah Watson, and Olivia Lindsey each tallied one hit and one run scored.


The Lady Knights took on the Lady Jaguars from Spalding High School in the home opener on Thursday, but the results of that game was not available by press time. Look in Tuesday’s edition of The Times for a full game recap.
