The Upson-Lee Knights golf team placed second in their Region 4 Tournament two weeks ago at Raintree Golf Course. The Knights shot a round of 348 in monsoon conditions, qualifying for the Sectionals which take place on Monday. The Knights will join 15 other AAAA teams from around the state, with the hopes of reaching the State Tournament in Augusta on May 19. Upson-Lee will participate in the GHSA AAAA Sectionals at Bull Creek Golf Course (West Course) just outside of Columbus on Monday.

The Knights will send six golfers to the Sectionals with the top four scores counting for the team score. Spalding, which won the Region 4 Tournament with a score of 326, automatically qualified for the State Tournament along with six other schools which won their regions and shot the qualifying score of 350. Worth County won their region tournament, but with a score of 358, did not shoot low enough to advance to the State Tournament. Any team which won their Region Tournament with a score of 350 or lower advanced to the State Tournament, and any team which won their tournament without shooting 350 or lower must play in the Sectionals. The Knights will be joined by Woodland as the other Region 4 team which qualified for the Sectionals, shooting a 388 at the Region 4 Tournament. Many teams which advanced to the Sectionals did not shoot the qualifying score of 350. Eight schools qualified for the Sectionals by shooting under 350, but the GHSA added the next eight lowest scores from around the state, giving the Sectionals a 16 team format.

With seven schools already qualifying for the State Tournament, it seems that the top nine schools from the Sectionals will advance to the state. Listed below are the teams which have qualified for the State and Sectionals tournaments. Look in The Times next week for an update on the Knights and their quest for a trip to the State Tournament. The GHSA AAAA State Tournament will be played on May 19 at West Lake Country Club in Martinez, Georgia, just outside of Augusta.
