Coach Tim Cook and his ULMS Knights entered their first round playoff game against Fort Valley Tuesday night with a perfect 11-0 record. After just one quarter of play, it was quite evident that the Knights were well on their way to a 12-0 record.
Upson-Lee seemingly put the game away in the first quarter, outscoring the Trojans by an 18-2 score. The Knights dominated in the paint with Jacorey Smith and Travon Walker, while guards Cameron Traylor and Zyrcie Scott caused havoc on the Trojans back court with an aggressive defensive style of play. Knights swing-man Tavias Fagan found his way to the rim with ease, leading the Knights, along with Smith, with 12 points in the game.
In the second quarter, the Trojans were able to get a little more going on offense, but again it was the Knights with the upper hand, outscoring Fort Valley 15-11. ULMS got some nice minutes off of the bench from Alex Lockhart, who finished with nine points in the contest. As the two teams went into the locker room at the half, the Knights held a commanding 33-13 lead.
In the third quarter the Knights poured it on, starting with their defensive pressure. Upson-Lee used their defensive pressure to transition into a fast break offense. Fagan and Scott each took advantage of the fast pace in the quarter, leading the Knights to an 18-point period. At the end of three quarters of play, Upson-Lee led 51-23.
Cook emptied his bench in the fourth quarter, but the Knights bench was still able to outscore Fort Valley, as ULMS cruised to a 59-28 first round victory.
Jacorey Smith and Tavias Fagan each paced the Knights with 12 points each. Zyrice Scott and Alex Lockhart netted nine points each, while Travon Walker added eight points. Cameron Traylor finished with five points, while Rodney Raines and Jalen Martin each chipped in with two points in the victory.
The Knights will now look to remain undefeated when they host Carver Road (Griffin) on Friday. Tip off for the CGMSAL Semi-Final playoff game is slated for 5 p.m.
