After advancing to the All-Navy National Championship last season, the Upson-Lee NJROTC Precision Rifle Team has qualified for the national competition once again this season. Coach Chuck Meyrriecks and his squad will join Union Grove and Henry County to represent Area 12 at the event in Anniston, Alabama on Feb. 14-16. If the Knights can place in the top 5 in the event, they qualify for the All-Service National Championship at Camp Perry in Ohio.
The Knights shot a total score of 2,222 out of a possible 2,400 to place third at the Area 12 Championship. Rosemary Kramer placed first in the individual competition, with a score of 586 out of a possible 600 points.
The Knights are currently undefeated in GHSA action, and seem to be poised for an undefeated regular season. Last season Upson-Lee advanced to the GHSA Finals, and should be favorites to make a return.
“These are some of the most dedicated young athletes I have ever been around,” said Coach Meyerriecks. “Their season started back in August and will not end until April. They practice every day from Monday through Thursday, and they are still going strong. I could not ask a better team. I am so proud of what they have accomplished and I am excited about what is to come, and I hope that everyone else is too.”
