The Upson-Lee Lady Knights softball team is currently having one of their better years in recent memory. They are sitting with a 6-0 record in Region 4, tied for first place with Locust Grove. A huge 9-4 comeback victory over Eagles Landing on Thursday kept the Lady Knights’ hopes of a top seed in the Region 4 Tournament still alive.
Prior to their 9-4 victory over Eagles Landing, Upson-Lee defeated Lamar County last Monday by a 6-0 score. Upson-Lee senior Chelsea Wainwright pitched a complete game shutout, while allowing only four hits and issuing zero walks in the game. Rachel Bridges paced the Lady Knights with two hits and two RBI in the contest, while Crystal Spoon delivered a hit, run scored, and a RBI. Lady Knights sophomore and hits leader Montana Schug added a hit and two runs scored in the victory. Schug is leading the Lady Knights with a .448 batting average.
After their 16-0 shutout of North Clayton on Wednesday, Upson-Lee played one of their biggest home games in recent years. In front of a packed out crowd at the ULHS Softball Complex, the Lady Knights found themselves down by a 3-0 score early in the game. However, Upson-Lee rallied to defeat Eagles Landing by a 9-4 scored, and remain undefeated in Region 4 play.
Kaylee Ellington took the mound for the Lady Knights, pitching two innings and giving up two runs while walking 2 batters and earning one strikeout. Chelsea Wainwright came in for relief in the third inning and held Eagles Landing to just one run on three hits over four innings.
Trailing 3-0, the Lady Knights tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning. Rachel Bridges led the inning off by reaching on an error, followed by an Alexis Pollard walk. Montana Schug added a sharp single up the middle to load the bases. Upson-Lee senior Taylor Thomas singled on a line drive to left field, scoring bridges. Pollard scored on a wild pitch, then Hannah Watson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Schug and tying the game up 3-3.
The Lady Knights held Eagles Landing scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, and added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Pollard drove home Bridges with a RBI single and Schug drove home Pollard with a single to left field.
The Lady Knights added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, sealing the 9-4 victory. Taylor Thomas paced the Lady Knights with two hits and three RBI, while Montana Schug added three hits, a run, scored and a RBI. Alexis Pollard finished the game with 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI, while Rachel Bridges scored two RBI and added a run scored. Hannah Watson finished the game with a hit, and RBI, Chelsea Wainwright added a hit and two runs scored, while Crystal Spoon finished the game with a hit and run scored.
