Dr. Lawrence L. Allen was honored last week with a proclamation designating July 11, 2014 as “Dr. L.L. Allen Day” in the City of Thomaston, upon his retirement from practicing medicine in Thomaston over the last 50 years. Mayor Hays Arnold made the declaration during a ceremony held at the government complex last Friday with many family and friends in attendance.

A native of Valdosta, Dr. Allen earned his medical degree in June 1960 after graduating from Valdosta State College and the Medical College of Georgia. After interning at Athens General Hospital, he came to Thomaston in 1963 at the request of Dr. R. E. Dallas and Dr. Justus Gower to serve in the Thomaston community. Dr. Allen became a certified Family Practitioner in 1970 and also served as the County’s Medical Examiner throughout the decade.

During that time, he was designated as a Fellow, American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP) and served in the Georgia National Guard as a physician/surgeon until his retirement from that position in 1995.

The proclamation states that Dr. Allen’s medical career included performing surgeries and delivering babies and noted he stood out in his profession for never turning a sick person away because they could not pay their bill. He was known to accept fresh vegetables or a baked dish as payment and if a person did not have anything to offer as payment, he would allow them to work in his yard or do other types of handyman work as a way to settle their bill.

While reading the proclamation, Mayor Arnold stated Dr. Allen is known as a caring, well respected, one-of-a-kind physician throughout the Thomaston community. Arnold wished Dr. Allen a wonderful retirement as he declared the day in Dr. Allen’s honor.

At the close of the ceremony, Dr. Allen thanked all of his family, friends and colleagues for their support over the years, noting it has been a pleasure to serve this community. However, he does not consider his service to be over; he is just starting a new chapter in his life.
