If you drove around the square recently, you may have noticed the Southern Crescent Technical College Community Development Center building on East Main Street listed as for sale and wondered what that meant for the programs it houses. According to SCTC provost Steve Daniel, the Adult Education and Economic Development departments are being relocated to the Flint River campus because they will not only fill available space on campus, but also save the school around $150,000 a year in rent.

Daniel noted the school, much like everyone else, is faced with a smaller budget each year and it made good financial sense to relocate the offices to the main campus. The building is owned by the SCTC Foundation and is then leased back to the school for $150,000 a year, with the current lease being up in December of this year. He continued noting that with the opening of the new industrial building in 2010, many departments have been relocated, leaving empty space in the A building, which will soon be filled by these two.

He also refuted rumors that have been circulating about the possible closing of SCTC’s Flint River campus.

“We have no intent of closing (the Flint River campus),” said Daniel. “This was simply a business decision that made financial sense.”

Daniel continued, stating he thinks having the Adult Education program on the main campus will make some aspects of it easier, especially if a student wants to visit one of the credit classrooms or with a teacher, as everything will be centrally located. He hopes the move will also help transition more of the adult education students into college courses.

For the time being, the plan is to have the departments moved to the Flint River campus by the fall of this year. However, Daniel stated if someone wants to buy the building and move in quicker than that, arrangements will be made.
