When Thomaston Mayor Hays Arnold finishes his term in office in two years, he will be ending his political career. At a reception for the Top 40 Under 40 held last Thursday night, Mayor Arnold announced that he will not seek re-election or public office again when his term ends.

Mayor Arnold made the announcement this far ahead of the end of his term in order to give his future successor time to learn all he can about what it will take to be the mayor of the City of Thomaston.

“I want to give you the time and opportunity to think about what you want to do in your life,” Arnold said. “As mayor, there are many, many more meetings to attend than just the ones the public sees you at. You need the ability to make plans, to have time to do what you can do as a City of Thomaston official.”

The mayor noted his successor will need to be educated about electricity, as he or she will serve as the city’s representative on the Municipal Electric Association of Georgia (MEAG) board. He or she will need to know about water and sewerage, not only on the local basis, but possibly regionally, as the mayor serves on the regional water commission. He or she will also need to know about transportation issues, both locally and regionally, as the mayor serves on the Three Rivers Regional Planning Commission, and about attracting business and industry, as the mayor serves on the Thomaston-Upson Industrial Development Authority. And the next mayor will need to have a good knowledge of the city’s infrastructure in order to keep the city moving forward.

Mayor Arnold told those present at the reception that there will be new ways of doing business coming, but that he expected them to be positive, especially in the government.

“You will be the ones to lead us in the future,” Mayor Arnold said. “You’ll have good finances and infrastructure to work with.

“I also want to thank the citizens of Thomaston,” he added. “Five times I’ve come to you for your vote, and five times you’ve elected me. I want to be able to leave my office batting .1000.”
