It is a difficult decision to make when you must choose between being able to afford the medication you need, food to feed yourself or your family, or paying the gas bill to have heat on a cold winter’s night. However, many people throughout the community are facing that very decision when they realize there are more needs than there is money in the bank account. Thankfully, there are caring people and organizations throughout the community who are trying to help those in need, one in particular being New Bethel Baptist Church. The church has partnered with several local businesses to offer a community-wide, free pancake breakfast the last Saturday of every month. The first will be held this Saturday, January 25 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist, located at 1278 Jeff Davis Road.

Rev. Claude Turner, pastor of New Bethel Baptist, stated he and his congregation wanted to invite the entire community to come out and fellowship during the breakfast. He noted the idea of a community-wide free pancake breakfast is not new to Thomaston, as New Hope Baptist formerly hosted the event for almost 10 years, but since they stopped doing so over a year ago, New Bethel wanted to step in and pick up where they left off.

“The reason for the breakfast is at the end of the month, seniors and a lot of other folks run short of money,” said Turner. “They either buy their prescriptions or their food or other necessities. We want to provide a free breakfast and you can even take several home with you to have later.”

Several local business have apartnered with the church to donate items needed or to cut the church a break when they purchase items for the breakfast. The Tasty Shop has joined the effort to supply the coffee each month.

“We just feel that it is a good thing for the community,” said owner Ernie Vaughn. “It is just something we wanted to be a part of.”

Other businesses involved include Northside Superette, Ingles Supermarket, Walmart Superstore, Southcrest Bank, Central Georgia Heating and Air, and Middle Georgia Aluminum.

According to Turner, the breakfast will consist of made-from-scratch pancakes, patty sausage, coffee, orange juice and milk. He stated the breakfast will be held the last Saturday of every month from now on and he hopes to see the community beginning this weekend.

“This breakfast is for everyone to come out and have fellowship with one another.”
