As if on schedule, more counterfeit money appears

It is getting to be that you can almost set your clock by it – about every five months, counterfeit bills show up in Upson County. The ‘funny money’ - mainly $20 bills, with some $5 bills mixed in – first appeared near the beginning of the year. After a couple of weeks of reports of counterfeit bills being turned in, they disappeared… until the middle of May, when a couple of more reports came in. Again, nothing after that… until last week, when two stores reported receiving false $20 bills.
The first incident happened on October 24. Thomaston Police Officer Bruce Gilbert responded to a forgery call at Mighty Mouse Grocery on S. Center Street. The owner said he took a food order from a home on Triune Avenue. When his employee delivered the food, he said a black male wearing dark clothes approached his vehicle and paid for the food with a $20 bill. The employee said he saw a second black male and a black female inside the residence. He gave the man his change and returned to the store. The store owner saw the $20 bill and recognized it as being counterfeit. The employee went back to the residence, but said the man refused to talk to him.
Officer Gilbert took the $20 as evidence. He went to the home on Triune Avenue and saw two black males and one female fitting the description given by the employee. The female said she had already cooked her food and she and one of the males were asleep when the delivery man brought the food over. Officer Gilbert advised the three that the incident is under investigation.
The second incident happened a day later at Pizza Hut at 301 N. Center Street. A delivery person returning to the store found she had a fake $20 bill in her possession. Thomaston Police Officer Johnny Middlebrooks responded to the call. The delivery person said there were four possible deliveries the bill could have come from: residences on Worthy Drive, South Center Street, Denham Street, and Wesley Avenue. The incident is under investigation.
