Fawne DeRosia wants kids to help her ‘paint the town’

If you have ever seen a play by the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council and admired the scenery or noticed the windows of a local business painted to show their Knights’ spirit for Homecoming, then you have likely encountered the work of local artist Fawne DeRosia. She has been painting her way around the Upson County community for more than 10 years now and has recently opened her own art studio, FD Studio and Gallery, on the square in downtown Thomaston.

“I really wanted to get out of my basement so I wouldn’t continue to get distracted by anything other than my work,” she stated when asked what drove her to rent the space in town. She also noted that it was sometimes hard to focus on a painting when there was laundry to be done.

But more than having her own designated art space to create and share her artwork, DeRosia also wanted the opportunity to bring other artists in the community together at a central location; therefore she knew opening a studio in town would be her best bet. She stated it was through her artwork that she was able to meet many people when she first moved to Thomaston with her husband Daniel Foy and their daughter Mazzy and she wanted to have the opportunity to continue to share her love of art with others.

For the time being DeRosia’s main focus is working with the young artists of the area and encouraging them to continue with the creativeness that we all seem to have at a young age. She noted that children seem to have so much more originality and are less self conscious about showing it to the world than some adults would be. Oftentimes she has heard an adult say “Well, I can’t do it as good as you can, so I just won’t,” which she feels is a shame because art is for anyone to create. Children on the other hand seem to not care as much about what someone else thinks; they all consider their painting to be a masterpiece and DeRosia wants to help them continue with that line of thinking.

“I am the happiest when I am making something,” she said crediting her love of art and all things creative to her parents. “When I work with kids I just want them to be happy and creative too. I want to give them the opportunity to make something without worrying that they are going to be graded on it.”

With all of that in mind, DeRosia has recently started hosting what she calls an “Arty Party” for children at her studio. During these classes she provides the paint, the canvas and chooses a design to show you step by step how to paint it, all you have to do is show up in your painting clothes. She has plans to expand the activities to include adults also, so that everyone can get in on the fun.
