For the fourth time since 2001, Upson County has received the designation of a Storm Ready Community by the National Weather Service. Every three years, there is a renewal process for the designation and Upson County has continued its status in the Storm Ready program each time. Barry Gooden, Chief Warning Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Peachtree City presented Upson County with a new sign at the Board of Commissioners meeting last week.

“The program is really for the community, to make sure the community is ready when storms do occur,” said Gooden. “I want to thank the Board of Commissioners for allowing Martha Anne (McCarty) to continue with the job she has done while standing on the shoulders of a great predecessor, Mr. Billy Mitcham. Martha Anne is doing a great job of continuing what he started.”

Commission Chairman Rusty Blackston expressed the board’s appreciation to McCarty for all that she does.

Also during the meeting, McCarty told the board that she had received a letter stating the county did receive a grant for weather sirens, which will allow the addition of seven to eight more sirens throughout the county. She also noted that with the grant, the project will only cost the county $2,500; which Blackston stated is the kind of project the county likes to tackle.

In other business, a beer and wine package license was approved for Upson County Grocery, located at 1038 Atwater Road.
