To: Mr. Jim Wheeless, Upson County Manager
Mr. Rusty Blackston, Chairman of Upson County Commissioners
Mr. Ralph Ellington, Commissioner
Mr. Steve Hudson, Commissioner
Mr. Lorenzo Wilder, Commissioner
Mr. Frank Spraggins, Commissioner
First, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to each of you and all who attended the beautiful event on September 14, 2013 at the New-Old R. E. Lee Football Field Opening Ceremony. This was the opening season for the 2013 Football Games for the Pee-Wee’s and Grass-Cutter’s football seasons. We were absolutely overwhelmed at the beauty of the field, the perfectly planned Program and the beauty of love and friendship extended. We were emotionally unable to speak!
The Upson County Commissioners chose to have a beautiful Opening Ceremony and in addition, they asked James Dawkins to cut the ribbon for the occasion and – then, Chairman Rusty Blackston announced that the field would be named the James Dawkins Youth Football Complex! This beautiful tribute was given in Recognition of the 35 years James had worked with the youth of Thomaston and Upson County; 24 years as PE Instructor at R. E. Lee Grammar school by the Board of Education and as City of Thomaston Recreation Director. He was named Director of the Thomaston-Upson Civic Center for 11 years under the arm of the City of Thomaston and Upson County.
There are no words or gifts to exceed both the thought of doing this great Hour in James’ name and for the years you have supported us. First, the outpouring of support to us at the death of our son, James, Jr. (Jim). Secondly, the overwhelming support at James’ Retirement Dinner. Thirdly, last year when Upson-Lee High School held yet another Dinner in James’ honor as a Fund-Raiser for the Upson-Lee Athletic Department and now, this wonderful act of love and appreciation.
Again, we regret our inability to speak to each of you of our appreciation at the actual dedication. We pray that this letter will better express our sincere and devoted appreciation to you as well as to all who attended the event!
We would be remiss if we did not recognize Mindy Daniel and Jeff Middlebrooks as well as their staff members and Paul Rogers of the City of Thomaston and his staff. This will follow in the next letter of appreciation.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, and may God Bless each of you as you have blessed us.
James and Betty Dawkins
