New air conditioning units installed over the summer were running and keeping schools cool, floors were waxed, windows were washed, desks were clean and in place, and teachers were ready as the doors opened last Thursday morning for the start of the 2015-2016 school year in the Thomaston-Upson School System.
School Superintendent Dr. Maggie Shook expressed her appreciation for all the hard work done by school staff, administrators, and contractors to get ready for the new year.
“Preparation for the opening of school definitely paid off on Thursday when our faculty and staff greeted approximately 4,300 students in grades PK-12,” Dr. Shook said. “This year, we added eight teacher and staff pre-planning and professional development days to the beginning of the school year. Teachers and staff members have been extremely pleased with the amount of collaboration, preparation, and training completed prior to the students’ arrival.
“The first day of school is always filled with excitement and anticipation, and it was great to walk the halls of the schools and see so many smiling students and staff and to feel the energy and enthusiasm that a new school year brings. I want to thank our school and system administrators, faculty, and staff for their hard work in preparation for the 2015-16 school year. We look forward to working with our students, parents, and community in an effort to provide every opportunity for all Thomaston-Upson students to experience academic growth and success.”
