The next two weekends are sure to offer lots of fun and entertainment for the whole family with a concert by the Due South Band this Saturday, August 8, at Greatest Generation Memorial Park (GGMP)and TUAC Junior Summer Theatre presenting Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” August 14-16.

Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame members, the Due South Band have been playing in and around the community for several years and will be in Thomaston for a free concert at GGMP on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. The band features Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore on the upright bass, Bennie Rose on guitar, David Thompson on mandolin and Gary Crenshaw on banjo. When asked what type of music they play, the band will tell you they specialize in “bluegrassabilly,” a mixture of bluegrass and rock-a-billy type music.

Those attending the concert can bring their own chairs and blankets, food and drinks to the event, however no alcohol is allowed. Complimentary bottled water will be available during the show. This event is being sponsored by the City of Thomaston and the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council (TUAC).

Then next weekend, August 14-16, the community is invited to come out and see Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.,” presented by the TUAC Junior Summer Theatre with shows being held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Upson-Lee Fine Arts Center. The 60-minute musical, designed for young performers, is based on the 1994 Broadway production and Disney’s 1991 animated feature film. The Junior Theatre cast contains approximately 70 students led by Erin Clarke (Director), Clair Shaver (Assistant Director), Larkin McDaniel (Student Assistant) and Carmen Ellerbee (Producer).

“Beauty and the Beast Jr.” tells the story of Belle (Anna Jordan), an adventurous young girl, and the Beast (James Logan), her hideous captor who is actually a young prince trapped under a spell. In order to break the spell, the Beast must learn to love another and earn her love in return – before time runs out. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, including a loving teapot (Anna Davis), a charming candelabra (Dalton Dennis), and a nervous mantel clock (Kya Haywood), Belle and the Beast find a beautiful friendship and love that neither knew was possible. “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” features classic songs from the Academy Award-winning film score such as “Be Our Guest” and “Belle,” as well as original songs from the 1994 Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

Corporate sponsors for the “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” are Dr. Johnny Brown, D.M.D. and Zoe Pediatrics. Tickets for the show are $7 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased ahead of time at the TUAC office, located at 201 South Center Street in Thomaston or at the door.
