In just over a week the 2015-2016 school year will be upon us and for students the carefree days of summer will give way to doing homework and studying for tests. But before that first bell rings, two events are planned to help students be prepared and blow off a little steam before buckling down, with a Back 2 School Bash being held on Thursday, August 6 and Kids Day at the Greatest Generation Memorial Park being held on Friday, August 7.
The Back 2 School Bash is a school supply give away that will be held at the Thomaston-Upson County Civic Center for kindergarten through fifth grade students on August 6. The free event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. and is being sponsored by Upson Professionals, Thomaston-Upson Chamber of Commerce, Upson County, the City of Thomaston, Upson Regional Medical Center, R.U.S.H. Ministries, Southern Crescent Technical College, Upson Family Connection and the Thomaston-Upson School System.
The Back 2 School Bash will have drawstring book bags, crayons, pencils, composition notebooks, glue sticks, loose-leaf notebook paper, and many other school supplies to give out to students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade only. Children must be present in order to receive any of the supplies. Other groups will be on hand at the event to pass out information on their organizations and the Southern Crescent Technical College Cosmetology Department will be giving free haircuts, so you can make sure your little one looks sharp for the first day back.
Then on Friday, August 7, children are invited to the annual Kids Day at the Greatest Generation Memorial Park sponsored by the City of Thomaston. The event will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. and children are invited to play in the fountain, on the playground and see what they can catch in the fishing pond. It is free to come play and enjoy refreshments, but those wishing to fish are asked to bring their own bait, fishing pole and chairs to use at the pond. Children must also be accompanied by an adult while at the event.
