Business owners in the unincorporated area of Upson County are reminded it is time to pay their 2016 occupation taxes. According to Building and Zoning Director Doug Currier, II, all renewal notices were mailed out by yesterday, December 7, to current business owners. New businesses located in unincorporated Upson County which have not previously applied for their tax certificates must go to the Building and Zoning Department to pick up the necessary paperwork.
In a press release, Currier stated currently registered businesses are requested to provide updated information where necessary, which includes proof of up-to-date professional licenses, permits, bonds and other regulatory documents. Business owners must also provide proof that they have paid their 2015 real and personal property taxes and businesses which lease real or personal property must also prove that those current ad valorem taxes have been paid.
For new businesses, the State of Georgia required immigration-related affidavits must also be notarized and submitted to the Building and Zoning office. In addition, the business must also submit I.D. copies, as well as occupation taxes, either by mail or in person. Affidavits may be notarized by any Georgia-licensed notary and a Notary will be available in the Building and Zoning Department 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to assist owners completing their paperwork. Renewing businesses do not have to complete the immigration-related affidavits, if they have been previously submitted, unless information has changed. E-Verify system-required businesses must annually report their E-Verify numbers in accordance with Georgia law.
Currier added that business owners are encouraged to submit their paperwork as soon as possible; however, the legal deadline in unincorporated Upson County is March 31, 2016. The completed 2016 Occupation Tax Certificates will be mailed by the Building and Zoning Department or may be picked up within two (2) days of filing of the completed paperwork.
