The Upson-Lee wrestling Knights made a statement in a big way on Tuesday night. The Knights welcomed Jones County to T-Town on Tuesday for a non-region match. The Greyhounds were coming off an appearance in the GHSA State Duals Meet. The Hounds were the AAAAA Region 2 Champions.

The Knights won their final match by forfeit to earn a big 37-35 team victory over the Greyhounds. Upson-Lee will now turn their attention to the Bears from Griffin, as they will face the Bears on Senior Night tonight at the ULHS gymnasium.

“It was a big win for us as a program,” said Knights wrestling coach Craig Logan. “We have gone up against some really good teams this season, and suffered some tough losses. I am proud of the way the guys battled tonight and earned a win against a very tough opponent.”

The Knights were led by C.J. Kirschmann, Deven Green, and Dillon Watson, who earned wins by pin. C.J. Kirschmann (195 pounds) pinned his opponent in the second round, giving the Knights six points. Deven Green (126 pounds) earned a tough pin in the third round against his opponent from Jones County, and Dillon Watson (160 pounds) earned a first round pin and six points for the Knights.

Jake Weatherford (182 pounds) earned a major decision victory, beating his opponent 11-2 and earning four points for the Knights. Jeff Bloodworth (220 pounds) earned Upson-Lee three points with a decision victory in overtime, while Michael Kirschmann (138 pounds) also earned three points for the Knights with a decision victory in overtime. Devontae Daniel (145 pounds) beat his opponent in points by a 16-12 score, and earned the Knights three points. Perhaps the most important victory of the Knights came in the final match of the night, as Tyrese Davis earned Upson-Lee six points with a win by forfeit.

Upson-Lee also had two junior varsity wrestlers earn victories on Tuesday. Dominique Stuckey and Bo Cummings each earned victories by pin.

The Knights are currently 10-8 overall this season, and hold a 3-3 record in Region 2. The Knights have region victories over Spalding, Jonesboro, and Dutchtown. Leading the way for the Knights this season are C.J. Kirschmann (19-2, 19 pins), Dillon Watson (14-6, 14 pins), and Jake Weatherford (14-6, 10 pins).

Senior Night festivities will take place prior to the Knights match against Griffin today, with Senior Night to start at 4:30 p.m.
