SouthCrest Bank Giants win Rookie League Championship

The 8 & Under Rookie League Championship was held at the Thomaston-Upson County Civic Center on Tuesday evening, where the undefeated SouthCrest Bank Giants took on the West Central Georgia Bank Braves.

The game was close for the first three innings of the contest, with the Giants leading by a 3-2 score. However, the Giants exploded for eight runs over the final three innings to earn the 11-3 victory and the Rookie League Championship.

The Giants scored two runs in the top of the first inning, after Jack Corley and Evan Showalter crossed the plate. Corley, Showalter, Christopher Callahan, and Campbell Hinson all tallied a hit in the inning, as the Giants took a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the of the first inning, the Braves connected with three hits of their own from Trent Coker, J.T. Reeves, and Traces Peaden, but all of the runners failed to score. In the top of the second inning the Giants added another run to their lead after Zack Showalter drove home Ke’nize Butler with a base hit. Colby Nuce also added a hit in the inning, giving the Giants a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Braves got on the board with two runs scored. Michael Foster and Cohen Ivie led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back base knocks, and each came home to score later in the inning, cutting the Giants lead to 3-2.

From that point on, the Giants dominated the game. In the top of the third inning Evan Showalter led the inning off with his second of four hits in the game. Ronnie Hughes followed with a base hit, but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single into a double. Callahan and Campbell also reached base, with Campbell driving home Showalter for the Giants fourth run of the game. Zack Nada and Colby Nuce each belted RBI base hits, driving home Callahan and Hinson, and giving the Giants a 6-2 lead.

The Giants added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Giants tallied five hits in the inning from Tyler Pasley, Cam Lowry, Evan Showalter, Ronnie Hughes, and Christopher Callahan. Pasley, Jack Corley, Showalter, and Hughes all crossed the plate in the inning, giving the Giants a 10-2 lead.

The Braves added another single run, as did the Giants. However, the damage had been done and the Giants cruised to the Championship victory and an undefeated season.

Evan Showlater led the way for the Giants with four hits and three run scored. Ronnie Hughes, Christopher Callahan, Campbell Hinson, Zach Nada, Colby Nuce, and Ke’nize Butler all finished with two hits in the contest. Jack Corley, Luke Willis, Tyler Pasley, Zack Showalter, and Cam Lowry each chipped in with one hit in the victory.

J.T. Reeves paced the Braves with two hits, a RBI, and a run scored. Trent Coker, Amare Collier, Cohen Ivie, and Michael Foster also added two hits each, while Trace Peaden, Lane Weatherford, and Mason Hardeman finished with one hit each in the loss.
