The Upson-Lee Lady Knights (12-6) traveled to Warner Robins on Wednesday night to take on the No. 3 State Ranked Lady Warhawks (15-1) from Veterans High School in the first round of the State Playoffs.

The Lady Knights keeper Haylie Zolman was busy for most of the night, as Veterans fired off 25 shots on goal, compared to only one shot which Veterans’ keeper had to save. Of the 25 shots on goal, Zolman was able to save 23 shots, but the Lady Knights suffered a 2-0 loss, ending their 2014 season.

Veterans controlled the ball and tempo for much of the game, and near the 23:00 mark of the first half, Veterans’ Miranda Wyatt put the Lady Warhawks on the board. Wyatt made a run down the middle of the field, splitting two Lady Knights defenders. Zolman came off her line to get the ball, but Wyatt beat Zolman to the ball and was able to score, giving Veterans a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half of the game, when Veterans struck once more. With just over 11 minutes remaining in the contest, Khayla Owens streaked down the right side of the field, and curled in about 12 yards out. Owens sent the ball high into the goal, just off the finger tips of Zolman, sealing Veterans’ 2-0 victory.

The Lady Knights will get their chance to face the Lady Warhawks, back-to-back region champions and a Final Four team last year, again as Veterans and Upson-Lee will be competing in Region 2 over the next two seasons. The three other teams from Region 4 were also in action against three other Region 2 teams. Spalding defeated Mary Persons by a 4-1 score, while Locust Grove defeated Howard 4-2. In what some may call an upset, Woodland the No. 3 seed from Region 4, defeated Rutland the No. 2 seed from Region 2 by a 2-1 score in Macon.

Along with Veterans (15-1), Mary Persons (9-8), and Howard (9-5), the Lady Knights will be in the same region with West Laurens (8-8-1), Perry (3-14-1), and Baldwin (3-12).
