Don’t expect to see any changes on the Upson County Board of Commissioners or the Thomaston-Upson Board of Education. The two incumbent County Commissioners and the three incumbent Board of Education members were the only ones to qualify for their respective positions last week.
Upson County Election Supervisor Brenda Dawson issued the following release Friday afternoon:
“Qualifying ended at 12 p.m. today, March 7, 2014. We had three Nonpartisan and two Republicans to qualify. Stanley Smith, Chairman of the Upson County Democratic Party, conducted qualifying on behalf of the Democratic Party. According to Mr. Smith, there were no Democrats to qualify for this election.”
Up for election were the County Commissioner District 3 post held by Ralph Ellington and the County Commissioner District 4 post held by Frank Spraggins. Both qualified as Republicans.
Also up for election were the School Board District 2 post held by Jacqueline Hollis, the School Board District 4 post held by Keith Rohling, and the School Board District 6 post held by Steve Sadler. All three qualified as NonPartisan.
Brenda Dawson said Friday that although none of the incumbents are facing opposition, their names will be on the General Primary/NonPartisan Election ballot. The primary election will be held on May 20, 2014.
In state races, District 131 State Representative Johnnie Caldwell, Jr., a Republican, was the only candidate to qualify for his race. Caldwell, a Thomaston attorney and former Superior Court Judge, will begin his second term of office in January 2015.
The District 18 State Senate race will be decided in the Primary, as only two Republican candidates qualified. Incumbent Cecil Staton announced last month he would not seek re-election. Qualifying for the post were Dr. Spencer Price, a Thomaston resident, and Macon attorney John F. Kennedy. With no Democratic or other party opposition, the winner of the May 20 primary will win the seat.
