Head Coach Craig Logan and his Knights made history on Saturday at Locust Grove High School. The Knights wrestling squad took part in the Region 4 Traditional Tournament, where the top four in each weight class would advance to the Sectionals, which take place at Lanier High School this weekend. After the dust had cleared, the Knights finished with 12 wrestlers advancing to the Sectionals, a new school record. The old school record was nine wrestlers two years ago.
The Knights finished as the Region Runners-Up in the team standings, just behind Locust Grove. However, Upson-Lee’s 12 wrestlers advancing were the most of any of the 11 schools in the region, including Locust Grove (10).
“I am so proud of what the guys accomplished today,” said Logan. “I am not sure if people really understand what happened today, but to send nearly an entire wrestling team to Sectionals is a pretty big deal. The guys have worked extremely hard, and now they are getting the chance to benefit from their hard work.”
Of the 14 weight classes in the tournament, the Knights qualified wrestlers in 12 of them. Upson-Lee senior Jacob Gross won the Region 4 Championship in the 195-pound weight class, while sophomore Bo Cummings earned a Region 4 Championship in the 170-pound weight division.
Here is a rundown of how the Knights sent a school record 12 wrestlers to the Sectionals this weekend:
106 pounds: Trevaun Collins defeated his opponent from Jonesboro to advance to the quarterfinals, earning a fourth place finish in the region.
113 pounds: Josh Draime defeated his opponent from Dutchtown in the Consolation Finals to earn a third place finish in the region.
120 pounds: Kolby Schadenberg defeated opponents from Spalding and Dutchtown before being edged out in a tough 8-7 decision loss in the finals, finishing as the Region 4 Runner-Up.
126 pounds: Freshman Max Duncan defeated his opponents from Spalding and Dutchtown to finish as the Region 4 Runner-Up.
132 pounds: Joey Spurling defeated his opponent from Spalding in the Consolation Finals to place third in the region.
138 pounds: Upson-Lee senior Deven Green defeated his opponent from Locust Grove to place fourth in the region.
145 pounds: Upson-Lee junior Michael Kirschmann defeated his opponent from Spalding in the Consolation Finals for a third place finish in the region.
152 pounds: Freshman Keyontae “Baby-D” Robinson earned victories over opponents from Jonesboro and Dutchtown for a second place finish in the region.
170 pounds: Upson-Lee’s Bo Cummings defeated opponents from Stockbridge, Locust Grove, and Riverdale in the Finals to be crowned Region 4 Champion.
195 pounds: Upson-Lee senior Jacob Gross earned victories over Stockbridge, North Clayton and Spalding in the Finals to be crowned Region 4 Champion.
220 pounds: Upson-Lee senior Nathaniel Bloodworth defeated his opponent from Stockbridge to earn a second place finish in the region.
285 pounds: Junior Jacob Jackson defeated his opponents from Stockbridge and Spalding to earn a third place finish in the region.
The Knights will now head north to Sugar Hill and take place in the GHSA AAAA East Sectionals at Lanier High School on Friday and Saturday. The top eight in each weight class will earn a spot in the State Tournament next weekend at Gwinnett Arena.
